There are no formal education requirements to become a painter, although some technical schools offer certificates in painting and some workers learn to paint in apprenticeship programs. Most painters learn their trade on the job. They learn to prepare surfaces, apply coatings, hang wall coverings and combine colors. The numerous jobs listed above require a set of specific skills that must be learned in a controlled environment and practiced over and over again.
Many licensed house painters begin their craft through an apprenticeship. Typically, applicants must be over 18 years old, pass a background check, and be in good physical shape to perform work.
